Community and Engagement
At the University of Arkansas, we believe that art is a fundamental part of a functioning society. We strive to build a sense of community among our students, faculty, and visiting artists through a variety of events, exhibitions, and programs. From regular lectures by renowned artists and critics to exhibitions in our Fine Arts Center Gallery and sUgAR Gallery, we provide numerous opportunities for students to engage with the art world and its practitioners.
Faculty and Visiting Artists
Our dedicated faculty consists of accomplished artists and scholars who are passionate about teaching and mentoring. Our visiting artist program brings in esteemed artists from around the world to share their experiences, techniques, and insights with our students. These interactions provide valuable learning experiences and expose our students to diverse perspectives and creative approaches.
Degree Programs
We offer two undergraduate degree programs: the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Studio Art with a focus on Painting. The BA program provides students with a broad-based education in the arts, while the BFA program offers a more intensive, studio-based education in painting.
BA in Studio Art (Painting Emphasis)
The BA program requires students to take 12 credit hours of Painting coursework. A faculty-supervised summary critique is required of each student graduating with an emphasis in Painting before completion of the degree.
BFA in Studio Art (Painting Concentration)
Our BFA program begins with a strong foundation in the tradition of painting, focusing on the development of technical skills, conceptual awareness, and historical context. Students engage in individualized studio instruction, peer critiques, and interactions with visiting artists to refine their artistic voice.
Research and Development
Our program emphasizes research, questioning, and systematic experimentation as the foundation for the development of an individual voice in painting. We encourage students to explore different approaches to painting, from figure and landscape painting to formal and perceptual abstraction, contemporary approaches to representation, and water media.
